Rapido HO Scale GE 44 Tonner – Western Maryland #75 – DCC/Sound

Add a distinctive Western Maryland diesel switcher to your HO Scale railroad with the Rapido Trains GE 44 Tonner Western Maryland #75, finished in the railroad's classic black paint scheme with gold lettering and the recognizable red Fireball herald. This highly detailed model represents a Phase II General Electric 44-ton diesel-electric locomotive, combining authentic railroad-specific detailing with smooth-running performance and factory-installed ESU DCC/Sound.

The General Electric 44 Tonner was designed for light-duty switching assignments, industrial operations, railroad shops, and smaller yards where larger diesel locomotives were unnecessary. Its compact center-cab design and lightweight construction made it particularly useful for handling freight cars in confined operating areas.

Rapido's HO Scale reproduction of Western Maryland #75 features a heavy die-cast chassis, fully detailed cab interior, finely rendered exterior components, and a smooth-running coreless motor with dual flywheels. Factory-installed DCC/Sound and Rapido's MoPower capacitor system make this locomotive an excellent choice for realistic switching operations.

Western Maryland GE 44 Tonner #75 – Phase II

This model represents Western Maryland Railway #75 with the Phase II body configuration, one of the additional GE 44 Tonner variations introduced in Rapido's newer production run. The Phase II design features distinctive body and exterior characteristics that distinguish it from earlier and later GE 44-ton locomotives.

Western Maryland #75 features a black locomotive body with contrasting gold WESTERN MARYLAND lettering, gold handrails, and the railroad's red Fireball herald on the cab sides. This classic appearance reflects the Western Maryland Railway's distinctive locomotive identity.

The Western Maryland Railway operated through Maryland, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia, serving coal-producing regions, industrial customers, and connecting railroads. Compact diesel locomotives such as the GE 44 Tonner were well suited for lighter switching assignments and railroad facilities where larger road locomotives were unnecessary.

With its distinctive paint scheme and compact proportions, Western Maryland #75 makes an excellent addition to an HO Scale railroad representing the steam-to-diesel transition and early diesel eras.

Factory-Installed ESU DCC & Sound

This Rapido GE 44 Tonner comes equipped with a factory-installed ESU DCC/Sound decoder, providing realistic diesel locomotive audio and digital control capabilities. The sound system brings the character of a compact General Electric diesel switcher to life with engine sounds, horn, bell, and additional operating functions.

Rapido's MoPower capacitor system helps maintain decoder operation during brief interruptions in electrical pickup. This is particularly useful for a small switching locomotive frequently operating through turnouts, industrial sidings, and yard ladders.

  • Factory-installed ESU DCC/Sound decoder
  • Realistic GE 44 Tonner diesel engine sound effects
  • Horn, bell, and additional locomotive sound functions
  • Digital speed and direction control with compatible DCC systems
  • Rapido MoPower capacitor system for improved electrical continuity
  • Factory-installed locomotive lighting
  • Adjustable sound and operating functions through compatible DCC systems

General Electric 44 Tonner Prototype History

The General Electric 44 Tonner was introduced in 1940 as a lightweight diesel-electric locomotive designed primarily for switching service. Its development was influenced by railroad labor agreements that required an additional crew member on locomotives weighing more than 90,000 pounds. With a target weight of approximately 88,000 pounds, the GE 44 Tonner remained below this threshold, making it an economical choice for light-duty switching assignments.

More than 300 GE 44 Tonners were constructed between 1940 and 1956, serving major railroads, shortlines, industrial operators, military installations, and manufacturing facilities. Their compact center-cab design and versatile operating characteristics made them particularly effective for handling freight cars in confined industrial areas and smaller railroad yards.

Many GE 44 Tonners remained in service for decades, and several examples survive today in preservation and tourist railroad operations. Their distinctive appearance and important role in early dieselization make them a popular subject for HO Scale model railroaders.

Ideal for Western Maryland & Industrial Switching Operations

The Western Maryland #75 GE 44 Tonner is an excellent choice for modelers recreating Western Maryland Railway operations during the transition and early diesel eras. Its compact proportions make it particularly well suited for smaller freight yards, industrial districts, engine terminals, and railroad shop assignments.

Pair this locomotive with period-appropriate boxcars, gondolas, hoppers, and other freight equipment to recreate realistic local freight operations. Whether switching cars at a manufacturing facility, working a small railroad yard, or handling shop duties, the GE 44 Tonner provides an authentic representation of compact diesel switching power.
